Your Circumstances Don’t Decide Who You Become

by Francisco "Paco" Licea

As I get older, my perspective has changed. I start to pay attention to things that I never paid attention to before. My circumstances, your circumstances don't define who you are. Something I've been thinking about a lot lately. Let me explain. Have you ever thought, "How the hell did I get here?" Whether it be you don't have enough finances in your account, whether it be your business is is not succeeding or is struggling. whether emotionally or mentally you have some challenges or your health isn't where it's supposed to be. Um all of this can turn into our identity and define us. My business isn't succeeding. I'm a failure. I'm not happy with my health. I'm a failure. Right? It's very easy to have those circumstances become our identity which is I'm a failure. And for me, a lot of that was um I never had time for me. I never made Let me rephrase that. I never made time for me. I was always on the go. What's next? What's next? There's always an email, a business plan, a client. There's always something to do. And I always looked for it to do it. If I sat and was present and did nothing, that was very uncomfortable for me. Well, I realized that a lot of it was avoidance and it's something that I had to learn to deal with. Um, and that was by being busy, I was able to avoid certain things. And what it was was I didn't I didn't have to look in the mirror and see that the person in front of me was not in a good place spiritually, emotionally, um or physically. Uh I've been on the go for years and years and years. And physically I was suffering, mentally I was suffering, and spiritually I was suffering. So I had to stop. I had to stop, slow down, be present, pray. I had to self-reflect. I had to look in the mirror. Right now, when I'm done, I'm going to go to my backyard, drink some tea, and it's just me and my tea and my thoughts. Something I would never do in a million years because I got things to do. So, what I'm trying to say is it's just a decision to do it. It's not going to be easy. It's as a matter of fact, it's going to be very difficult. But we choose what we want to become. We choose what we uh what the next chapter is. But sometimes we forget that because our past is trying to define our future. Two different things. So choose what is it we need to work
