Were we lied to?

by Francisco "Paco" Licea

I think we've been lied to or I misunderstood the assignment. It was my impression or I was led to believe that as we got older, we would understand life more. It'd be easier to figure out. I think that's a lie. As a matter of fact, I'm 50 and for the first time, I think I'm finally starting to figure out life.

Barely starting to figure out life. Not that I already figured out life. I expected by the by this age uh business-wise, finance-wise, emotional wise, family-wise, everything would be so much easier. And I think that was my mistake. But then I started to realize that a lot of us, I think, think like that. We worked for 20 25 years to build something thinking that somehow things would get easier and they don't get easier. They just evolve. Our kids get older. We become empty nesters. My perspective has completely changed that where I thought I should have already known should know I'm barely starting to learn and understand. And I said, "I'm 50 now."

And at first I thought I was too late. I thought that I'm too old to learn to grow. And then my perspective changed. And I realized my perspective was wrong in thinking that I would have it figured out by now. Well, my perspective should be is that it's never too late to figure out what life should be. And I think that's the point. I'm realizing I don't know anything. And by saying that, I'm learning all the stuff I thought I was going to just know. But it's never too late to learn. It's never too late to grow. It's never too late to discover. And I've started to meet a lot of people, talk to people who think the opposite. It's already too late because they're in their 40s or their 50s. We still got a lot of life left. I want to spend the rest of my life figuring out what it is I don't know. Learn the things I never thought I had time to learn as opposed to assuming I know, acting like I know, or being under the impression I'm supposed to know. There's a lot of life to live, God willing. There's a lot I want to learn, a lot I want to grow with, but I'm just starting. It's never too late.
